- FLUOROSCOPY
Fluoroscopy is a technique used for obtaining "live" x-ray images of a patient. The x-ray passing through the patient is detected on a fluorescent plate which is converted to light and sent to a TV monitor. This allows the radiologist to watch the patient in real time as the test is being performed. Fluoroscopy is used to observe the esophagus (Barium Swallow), the stomach (Upper GI) and the colon (Barium Enema). With the aid of barium and the use of fluoroscopy, radiologists can view the mobility of the esophagus, stomach and colon to possibly determine if there are any obstructions or restrictions in the normal flow and function of these organs. Fluoroscopy is also utilized during many other radiographic procedures to observe the action of instruments being used in exams such as arthrograms and cystograms.
