- ULTRASOUND
Ultrasound imaging is a radiation free diagnostic study that uses sound waves to study and characterize internal structures and tissues. It shows motion that is occurring at the time of the examination. For most ultrasound examinations, a hand held device, referred to as a transducer, is placed on the patient's skin by the technologist performing the examination. Sound waves are sent through the transducer and echoes are produced. These echoes are sent back to the transducer which creates images on a monitor. Transducers can also be placed in the vagina or rectum to view any internal abnormalities. There are circumstances where greater detail is necessary for a pelvic or obstetric ultrasound and a physician may order a transvaginal ultrasound for a better image. As the technologist sees specific organs, images are taken and printed out for the radiologist to interpret.
After the Test
The patient can resume normal activities.
Ultrasound in Conjunction with Other Tests
An ultrasound study may be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests. For example, an ultrasound carotid Doppler study may be used along with a CT or an MRI. A breast ultrasound may be done after a mammography exam.
